BIRTH OF THE BLACK PANTHERS 1966-1967 The Ten Point Platform of the Black Panther Party
1. Freedom and power to determine the destiny of black communities.
The panthers believed that black and oppressed people will not be free until they were able to determine their destinies in their own communities themselves, by fully controlling all the institutions which exist in their communities.
In my opinion I believe this is still relevant in our time now. Black people now are afraid to live in their own communities. Blacks see crimes and are scared to speak up. I feel we need to do more to take back our community and help stop all the killing and robbing. Form some type of block clubs or watch alerts, look out for your neighbor when they are not around. To me blacks have just given up they rather move to another state. Most blacks don’t know that there is power in numbers, everybody need to come together.
2. Full employment
The panthers believed that the federal government was responsible and obligated to give every person employment or a guaranteed income. They believe that if the American businessman will not give full employment, then technology and means of production should be taken from the businessman and placed in the community can organize and employ all of its people and give a high standard of living. I do believe this is still relevant in this time and era. In order to get anything from the government now days you have to work or be retired, crazy, or blind. When people have a business they have the right to hire who they think is the best person for the job. The government is still not giving out jobs. There are a lot of people that have gone to school and have college degrees that are working at McDonalds. I really don’t think that must have changed from back then in 1966. There is still a struggle for people to try and take care of their families. People are not only jobless they are homeless and hungry.
3. Financial restitution for slavery and black suffering
The panthers believed that the government was racist and had robbed us and now we are demanding the overdue debt of forty acres and two mules. Forty acres and two mules were promised 100 years ago as restitution for slave labor and mass murder of black people. They stated that they would accept the payment in currency which would be distributed to our communities. The American racist has taken part in the slaughter of our fifty million black people. Therefore, they felt this was a modest demand that they was making. I have heard about forty acres and a mule, I don’t know if the government is still giving those out especially not a mule since this is not 100 years ago. I don’t think this is still relevant in our time today. I understand there are some people in the world that still want restitution for their families being slaves, and for the murder of their loved ones. I don’t believe that everybody in the government is racist not then or now. There are black people that think the government owe them something because they are lazy and don’t want to work for the things they need. There are also black people that blame the government for the things that they don’t have so they pull the racist card. I do believe that there are some people that are still racist, but not all people. They are people out here that really want to help people get on their feet. 4. Decent housing
The black panthers believed that if the landlords will not give decent housing to our black and oppressed communities, then housing and the land should be made into cooperatives so that the people in our communities, with the government aid, can build and make a decent housing for people.
I believe this is relevant in this time. I feel this way because the government has made...
