DESIREE’S BABY : Anyone Could Be A Slave
“Desiree’s Baby”, a great and realistic short story, has drag me into the slavery era, when there is a huge wall between the ‘white’ people and ‘black’ people, when the social hierarchy was determined by races, but in the other hand the relation between white people and black people can form biracial people who is placed in the society according their skin.
This story seems very short for a short story. But, the complexity of the story can be analyzed and make the story as the very long story. Kate Chopin make many spaces and hole in the story, leaving the reader to deduce many things in the story. That’s why I said from the first time, that this story has totally drag me in. Reading from the very beginning of Kate Chopin’s short story that is the title: Desiree’s baby. Make a question hanging inside my head. Why the title must be ‘Desiree’s Baby’? Why it is not Desiree and Armand’s Baby? Even though in the story, we all know that Desiree and Armand got married and having a baby. But, when I continued my reading, I found the reason why. The story showed us that Armand finally disposed the baby and Desiree as his wife at once when he realize that the baby is black and black people is in the bottom of society class—different from him. So, the writer want to show us from the very beginning that the conflict of the story is the baby, who was being disposed by his father. That’s why the one who was shown is only Desiree.
From the story, we know that Armand and Desiree themselves hold the belief of the racial class. Since Armand is a white people who is from the proudest family in Lousiana, he glorify himself as the noble man and the top of the social class. That’s why he didn’t want his name and his family name to be soiled by anything. And so that Desiree, she also hold the belief of social class, she is white and can get married with a white-noble man. We can see this in the scene when Desiree and Armand arguing about...
