Choosing to upgrade an information system that is outdated involves several different steps. The fact that the existing hardware is not compatible with the CRM system means there will be large cost incurred with implementation of the new system. The first thing the company should determine is if the benefits of the new system outweigh the cost involved. Once this is determined the next step to building a new system is the problem-solving process. The steps involved are define and understand the problem, develop alternative solutions, choose the best solution, and implement the solution. (Laudon & Laudon, 2011) The system that has been chosen is the CRM system. This system when designed and implemented properly can provide a single enterprise view of customers that is useful for improving sales and customer service. (Laudon & Laudon, 2011) The CRM system when operational will allow the company to manage sales targeted to the most profitable customers, provide better customer service, and attract new customers. The system can also reduce the cost of marketing and customer service. The CRM system the company has chosen to implement will become an asset to the company. However, it is imperative that the major variables of project management are implemented into the plan. There is a high failure rate among information systems projects because they have not been properly managed. (Laudon & Laudon, 2011) Project management refers to the application of knowledge, skills, tools, and techniques to achieve specific targets within specified budget and time constraints. (Laudon & Laudon, 2011) Project management for information systems consist of five major variables: scope, time, cost, quality, and risk.
